Arrington earned the Region XIV South Conference coach of the year honors for the seventh time in his 10 years at the helm of the San Jac program. This season, he guided SJC to a 44-10 overall record, a number one seed at the upcoming Region XIV tournament in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and a current No. 1 ranking in both the Perfect Game and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) / Perfect Game USA Baseball Division I polls.
Pitchers Sean Nolin (Seaford, New York / Seaford HS) and Miguel Peña (La Joya / La Joya HS), and catcher Ryan Hornback (Sweeny / Sweeny HS), were unanimous selections to the All-Conference team. Joining them are pitcher Chris McKenzie (Framingham, Mass. / Marian HS), outfielder Riley Hornback (Sweeny / Sweeny HS), and relief pitcher Clay Schrader (Humble / Atascocita HS).
Nolin and Peña are a combined 22-1 on the season, leading a pitching staff that owns a 2.48 ERA. Peña leads the league, and is 10th in the nation, with a 1.34 ERA, while Nolin is tied for fifth in the conference with a 2.24 mark. Peña, a freshman, was a high school All-American and a fifth round pick of the Washington Nationals in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, prior to joining the San Jac team this season. Nolin leads the team in strikeouts with 74.
Freshman Ryan Hornback is hitting .342 on the season behind 51 hits and 30 RBI, scoring 35 runs.
McKenzie, a sophomore, is 6-1 on the year with a 2.54 ERA (2.09 in Region XIV play). He's pitched in 60.33 innings.
Sophomore Riley Hornback, in conjunction with his brother, is one of the team's offensive leaders. Hitting .352 on the season, Riley has seen the most plate appearances with 193 and has 68 hits, including 11 doubles, two triples, four homeruns, and 50 RBI.
Schrader is 1-0 on the season, with a team-leading 11 saves. In just over 25 innings of work, the sophomore owns a 2.81 ERA.
San Jac opens the 2010 Region XIV conference tournament this Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 5:30 p.m. against Angelina College.
